(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Japan is the second largest shrimp importer in the world, accounting for about 14% of total shrimp import value of the world by 2017. Each year, Japan imports about US$2.5 billion of shrimp products.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Since the second quarter of 2018, Vietnam shrimp export have continuously declined compared with the same period in 2017. In September, Vietnam shrimp exports decreased 14.8% over the same period last year to nearly 332 million USD. Due to the decline in the second quarter and the third quarter of this year, shrimp exports in the first nine months of this year reached $ 2.6 billion, with 4% lower as for the same period in 2017.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Since the beginning of the second quarter to August this year, Vietnam’s shrimp exports remained the downward trend in value over the same period in 2017. Specifically, in July, exports fell by 20.3% over the same period last year; sales to most of major importing markets fell sharply.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to a report from Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA), in the first seven months of this year, the U.S imported 359,948 MT of shrimp, worth by US$3.3 billion, up 3% in volume but down 1% in value from a year ago.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The EU is the largest export market of Vietnamese shrimp, accounting for 24.7 percent of Vietnam’s total shrimp exports. Vietnam’s shrimp exports to this market as of September this year reached 648.4 million USD, up 11 percent over the same period in 2017.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The EU reamined as the largest importing market of Vietnamese shrimp in the first 7 months of this year, accounting for nearly 25%. Vietnam’s shrimp exports to EU registered the good growth in the first half of the year. However, exports to this market in July began to fall by 14.6% to see US$74 million. This was driven by a dip in the price of raw shrimp which affected on the export price. In the first seven months of this year, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the EU market reached US$479.8 million, an increase of 26% over the same period last year.

Intensive processing has served as an effective tool for Vietnamese shrimp exporters to improve their competitive capacity in the context of a steep increase in the global supply which brought down the price and demand for shrimp in major markets.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After a slight decrease of 5% in QII/2018, Vietnam’s shrimp exports in the first month of QIII decreased by 20.3% to see US$294.5 million. The figure in the first 7 months of this year estimated at US$1.9 billion, a slight rise of 0.2% over the same period last year.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam’s shrimp exports in QII/2018 reached over US$893 million, down 4.9% due to fluctuations in the domestic and global shrimp prices. However, thanks to the growth of 20% in QI, the figure in the first half of this year slightly increased by 5.1% to see US$1.6 billion. With higher import demand in Apr-Jun this year and steady shrimp prices, Vietnam’s shrimp sales this year expected to total US$4 billion.

(vasep.com.vn) After 10 years implementing the Resolution No 26-NQ/TW on agriculture, rural areas, farmers (2008 - 2018), Vietnam seafood export turnover doubled. In particular, shrimp exports accounted for the largest proportion and strongest and the most stable growth. After 10 years, shrimp export turnover increased nearly 2.5 times from $1.6 billion to nearly $3.9 billion, with an average annual growth of 9%. Shrimp exports account for a increasing share of total seafood exports: from 36% to over 50%.
