This is the presentation of Dr. Ho Quoc Luc (Former Chairman of VASEP, Chairman of FIMEX VN) in the Conference “Global shrimp demand and Vietnam’s supply capacity to 2025” in the framework of Vietfish 2018.
I. POTENTIAL OF FARMING
- The area for shrimp farming is over 700,000 ha
- Farmers can raise shrimp all year round thanks to the weather in Vietnam
- Farmers in Vietnam have the level of shrimp farming above the world average
- There are many farms with the high level, reaching international standards: ASC, BAP, ...
II. POTENTIAL OF PROCESSING
- There are nearly a hundred shrimp processing factories in Vietnam :
+ General capacity of 500,000 MT/year.
+ Scales can be extended twice in a short time
- There are many large scale processing plants – meetingthe needs of large distribution systems
- The processing level of refined products stays high in the world
III. SUPPORTS
- The system of shrimp feed factories is constantly expanding its capacity
- Artificial post-larval shrimp breeding facilities expand their scale
- Logistics services are changing significantly, timely meet services for exports
- Goverment: issued Decree 57/2018/ND-CP on17th April 2018 on mechanisms and policies to encourage enterprises to invest in agriculture and rural area
- MARD: often:
Manage aquatic veterinary drugs
Recommend clean farming
Develop fisheries extension programs to bring new technologies to the farmers fastest
IV. CHALLENGES
- The area of spontaneous farming is high, and small-scale farming accounts for a high proportion -> control is limited
- Infrastructure has not kept pace with the farming movement: Many areas lack electricity, irrigation, roads...
- Shrimp breeders do not come up the standards:
+ Come from many different sources
+ There are many small facilities for artificial shrimp cultivation
-> There are limitation in good shrimp seeds and disease free, high costs of shrimp farming
V. SOLUTIONS
It is necessary to have a more detailed farming area plan and to have adequate and synchronous investment in infrastructure.
Implementation of large farming areas, farm size according to the international standards on the establishment of cooperative farming or land accumulation
launched a national parent shrimp production program & tight control of shrimp supply system.
