Japanese market expands its demand for Vietnamese pangasius

The event gathered representatives from management agencies, experts, scientists and enterprises to discuss solutions for boosting production, enhancing value and expanding consumption markets for this “promising candidate” in Vietnam’s sustainable export strategy.

The market landscape is shifting notably with CPTPP countries, Brazil and Thailand emerging as growth drivers while China - Hong Kong and the U.S show signs of stagnation.

The general trend of the Pangasius industry remained positive, reflected by the total export value in the first nine months of 2025 reaching nearly $1.6 billion, up 9% year-on-year.

According to the latest analysis report by Rong Viet Securities (VDSC), Vinh Hoan Corporation (VHC) continued to post positive business results in the first half of 2025, supported by stable export performance and improved profit margins.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to Vietnam Customs data, in the first8 months of 2025, Vietnam's tilapia exports (including red tilapia) reached over $63 million, a 174% increase compared to the same period last year - the highest level in the past five years.

(seafood.vasp.com.vn) As part of its 2025 agricultural, forestry, and fisheries development plan, Tay Ninh province has set a target of 174,800 tons in aquaculture and capture fisheries production, of which pangasius alone accounting for 126,000 tons. This highlights pangasius as the species driving the province's aquaculture development strategy.

(seafood.vasep.comvn) In the first eight months of 2025, Vietnam's pangasius exports reached $1.4 billion, a 10% increase compared to the same period in 2024, reinforcing its role as one of the country’s key seafood sectors. The HS03 product group (fresh/frozen/dried) contributed $1.383 billion, accounting for nearly 98% of the total pangasius export value. Among these, frozen pangasius fillets (HS0304) generated over $1.1 billion, up 11% from the previous year, continuing to be the mainstay product. Notably, processed products (HS16) reached $36 million with an impressive 32% growth compared to the same period in 2024, signaling positive developments in diversifying value-added products.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s tilapia exports (including red tilapia) reached over USD 63 million in the first 8 months of 2025, up 174% from the same period last year. This figure exceeded Vietnam’s tilapia export value over the past five years, since 2020. The US remained the largest importer, accounting for 62% of Vietnam’s tilapia exports.

In the first half of 2025, Vietnam’s pangasius output reached over 871,900 MT, up 4.5% year-on-year, while export value hit USD 1.023 billion, up 11%. Dong Thap continues to play a key role, contributing about 35% of both output and export turnover.

Tilapia is not only easy to raise and low-risk but also helps improve pond environments and enhance shrimp farming efficiency.

In July alone, export volume totaled 88,726 tons, up slightly by 0.2% from June and 8% year-on-year – the highest level since the beginning of the year.

Cumulatively, pangasius exports for the first 8 months of 2025 totaled over $1.4 billion, achieving a positive growth of 10% year-on-year. Several key markets continued to show positive developments.

Many farmers have adopted intensive pond farming models, combining proper feeding practices with strict water quality control.
