Aquaculture will make up 65 percent of the total fish production of the country, the rest 35 percent will be fish catching. Under the plan from now until 2020, the country’s seafood export turnover is projected to rake in US$11 billion with an annually average growth rate ranging from 7-8 percent; the value-added products will occupy 50 percent of total seafood exports; about half of fisheries workers will be trained and the average per capita income will triple; post-harvest loss will be dropped to 10 percent from the current level of 20 percent.
Between 2020 and 2030, the sector's total output is expected to reach 9 million MT, 70 per cent of which will come from aquaculture and capture output will account for 30 percent. Within the same time frame, export turnover is also projected to climb to US$20 billion with annually average growth rate of 6-7 percent; the proportion of value-added products for exports will reach 60 percent; around 80 percent of workers in the sector will receive training.
According to the sector’s master plan from now until the end of the decade, the fish landings will be 2.4 million MT. In which, marine catch will be 2.2 million MT and inland catch will be 0.2 million MT. Under the plan to 2020, the sector will catch 2 million of finfish, 200 thousand MT of squid, 50 thousand MT of shrimp and 150 thousand MT of other marine products.
The number of fishing vessels will be dropped to 110,000 ones up until 2020; and 95,000 ones by 2030 with the average reduction rate of 1.5 percent per year. By 2020, the number of nearshore fishing vessels will occupy 70 percent from the current level of 82 percent. The number of offshore fishing vessels will be 28,000 – 30,000 ones.

Hatcheries in the area are supplying high-quality, uniform, and disease-free fingerlings, meeting the growing demand for commercial farming.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) On March 10, 2026, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee issued Decision No. 1377/QD-UBND approving the Aquatic Animal Disease Prevention and Control Plan for the 2026–2030 period. The decision takes effect from the date of signing and replaces previous plans for the 2021–2030 period that had been issued prior to the administrative merger in Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City.

In 2026, the province aims to reach around 71,300 hectares of shrimp farming, with an output of over 314,000 tons.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In February 2026, Vietnam’s pangasius exports reached USD 119 million, down slightly 5% year-on-year. However, thanks to strong performance in January, cumulative exports in the first two months of the year still reached USD 331 million, up 28% compared to the same period in 2025. Export activity slowed somewhat in February due to seasonal factors, particularly the Lunar New Year holiday, which disrupted production and shipments at many seafood processing enterprises.

Many shrimp farms have invested in automated environmental monitoring systems, continuously tracking indicators such as pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and salinity, enabling farmers to promptly adjust pond conditions and reduce disease risks.

These factors are seen as key to improving seed quality and strengthening the competitiveness of the shrimp industry amid increasingly demanding market requirements.
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In February 2026, Vietnam’s shrimp exports reached nearly USD 310 million, up 17% year-on-year. Cumulatively for the first two months of the year, shrimp export value totaled USD 690 million, an increase of 20% compared with the same period last year. Compared with the 22% growth recorded in January, the pace of increase in February slowed somewhat, reflecting seasonal factors as the Lunar New Year holiday partially disrupted processing and shipment activities. Nevertheless, the nearly 20% growth in the first two months indicates that shrimp orders from Vietnam are maintaining a more positive trend than in the same period last year.
