Vietnam’s squid and octopus exports accelerate, bringing opportunities and growing pressure

News 08:05 02/10/2026
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam’s squid and octopus exports exceeded $527 million in the first eight months of 2026, marking a 15% year-on-year increase. This growth is particularly notable given the strong baseline established in 2025, when export turnover for the same period reached $458 million, a 13% rise from 2024.

Monthly data indicate an upward trend in squid and octopus exports in 2026. During the first quarter, export values were volatile, with some months recording increases, others declines, and some remaining broadly unchanged from the same period in 2025. This was likely a seasonal slowdown associated with the Lunar New Year holiday and the pace of shipments at the beginning of the year. From March onward, exports regained momentum. Notably, monthly export value peaked at $78 million, a 10% year-on-year increase. This suggests that market demand continues to provide support, although the pace of growth has moderated from earlier periods. On a positive note, recent monthly turnovers have stabilized in the $70–78 million range, outperforming the 2024 baseline and the majority of 2025. For squid and octopus processors and exporters, this suggests that orders are not only recovering in volume but may also be supported by export prices, product mix or more stable demand in several key markets.

However, the outlook is not without challenges. The final months of 2025 established a high comparative baseline, meaning the industry will face significant year-on-year pressure through the end of 2026. To maintain double-digit growth, monthly export turnover in the final months of the year will need to remain high, at a minimum of around $75–80 million. From a market perspective, aggregate turnover trends suggest a cautious recovery in import demand. Surges in certain months largely reflect order replenishment following inventory destocking phases. However, slower growth in July and August suggests that buyers may be taking a more cautious approach to prices, delivery schedules and year-end consumption prospects. For squid and octopus businesses, three factors will require close attention during this period. First is raw material supply, as the ability to ensure consistent deliveries will determine how well companies can retain orders, particularly from major buyers. Second is product mix, with deeply processed and convenient products suited to retail and foodservice channels potentially providing continued advantages. Third are prices and profit margins. Export growth is a positive signal, but if raw material, labor, logistics and financing costs rise faster than selling prices, companies may still face margin pressure. Overall, Vietnam’s squid and octopus exports have entered 2026 on a stronger footing than in the previous two years. Turnover remains elevated, post-holiday recovery has been robust, and August established a new peak for the year. Nevertheless, the final quarter will serve as a critical stress test. Enterprises must proactively secure raw material supplies, closely monitor ordering schedules across markets, maintain quality control and avoid pursuing growth at any cost.

Circular economy: an opportunity to raise value and enhance the competitiveness of Vietnam’s shrimp industry

 |  08:20 30/09/2026

(vasep.com.vn) A circular economy does not create a “new type of shrimp” or a new certification. Its value lies in helping the shrimp value chain use resources more efficiently, stabilize production, generate additional value from by-products and build the data and evidence needed to meet increasingly stringent market requirements. This was the perspective shared by VASEP at the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Forum on Promoting a Circular Economy in the Shrimp Industry in the Mekong Delta, held in Can Tho on September 21.

However, growth momentum is moderating and market divergece is becoming more pronounced, while the US and EU continue to present significant challenges. The latest insights from the Global shrimp forum 2026 (GSF 2026), held in early September, also indicate that the final months of the year will remain highly competitive as global supply continues to expand and buyers place greater emphasis on quality, product specifications, supply consistency and the ability to meet market-specific demand.
