Currently, CPTPP is still the leading export market group of Vietnamese shrimp enterprises. In the first 5 months of this year, shrimp export value to this block reached US$383.4 million, up 11.8%, accounting for 28.8% of total shrimp export value. In this block, Japan is the largest shrimp import market with a total export value of 230.7 million USD, up 2.3% over the same period last year.
Notably, in the first 5 months of 2021, shrimp exports to Australia increased sharply by 79.2%, reaching more than 71.8 million USD. In May 2021 alone, shrimp export value to this market reached 17.14 million USD, up nearly 144%.
So far, shrimp exports to the US and EU are still quite stable and growing well. Both of these markets have increased imports of frozen vannamei shrimp from Vietnam.
In the first 5 months of this year, in the structure of shrimp products exported to the US, steamed and processed white shrimp accounted for nearly 47% with an average price of 10.15 - 11.5 USD/kg. The second largest export product is tempura breaded shrimp, accounting for 16.5% with an average export price of 10.5 - 10.65 USD/kg. Frozen vannamei shrimp (HS code 03061721) accounted for 15% with the export value from 9.6 to 9.8 USD/kg. Currently, Vietnam is one of the four largest shrimp suppliers to the US market (along with India, Ecuador, Indonesia). However, up to this point, Vietnamese shrimp products are competing quite well in the US. By the end of May 2021, shrimp export value to this market reached 294 million USD, up 31% over the same period in 2020.
So far, vannamei products have continuously increased their market share in the EU due to lower selling prices compared to black tiger shrimp, sales increasing faster than average. Although in 2020, Europe's shrimp import picture is not very positive for the global shrimp industry due to COVID-19 reducing imports. However, since the beginning of this year, the demand for shrimp, especially whiteleg shrimp of many European countries has increased again. By the end of May 2021, shrimp export value to the EU reached 201.3 million USD, up 24% over the same period last year.
