On June 17, the global culinary consulting website TasteAtlas, headquartered in Zagreb, Croatia, announced a list of the 84 best seafood dishes in Southeast Asia.
TasteAtlas experts surveyed many street foods with strong local flavors to create this quality list.
Vietnam is honored to have 18 dishes included in the "guidebook," with "canh chua ca" (Vietnamese sweet and sour soup or sour fish soup) ranked second on the list by the prestigious site.
TasteAtlas describes “canh chua cá” as a variety of Vietnamese fish soups characterized by a combination of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors. "The soups are usually made with broths containing tamarind or pineapple, tomatoes, okra, bean sprouts, or other vegetables," TasteAtlas notes.
It reveals that most of these soups use catfish, but some also use carp, eel, and salmon. These soups are often flavored with cilantro and served with rice.
Other Vietnamese fish dishes on the list include braised fish in a clay pot, La Vong fish cakes, fish noodles, Vu Dai village braised fish, grilled snakehead fish, fried elephant ear fish, and linh fish hotpot with water mimosa flowers in the West.
Vietnamese dried squid, crab noodles, jellyfish salad, mussel rice, and crab-fried vermicelli also received compliments from TasteAtlas experts and readers for their flavor and creativity.
Founded in 2015, TasteAtlas is known for gathering traditional dishes from all over the world.
According to Matija Babić, founder of TasteAtlas, the food and beverage rankings are based on opinions and reviews from experts and food critics to ensure the reliability of the awards.
