Salmon exports rise by 19pc

News 14:23 13/09/2014
The volume of exports of Norwegian salmon in November totalled 101,000 tonnes, an increase of 13 per cent compared to the same month last year.

The value of exports in November totalled almost NOK 3 billion (EUR 408.4 million), an increase of almost NOK 472 million (EUR 64.3 million) or 19 per cent compared to November last year.

This year to date, Norwegian salmon exports have totalled 907,000 tonnes in volume and NOK 26.8 billion (EUR 3.6 billion) in value. The growth in the volume of exports for the year to date has been 22 per cent, while the growth in value has been up by 1 per cent or NOK 346 million (EUR 47.1 million) compared to the same period last year.

“The growth in the value of exports in November is being driven primarily by volume growth,” says market analyst Paul Aandahl from the Norwegian Seafood Council.  “Yet despite the strong growth in the volume of exports, prices for Norwegian salmon were higher than in November last year. This growth is being driven by continued positive trends in sales of fresh and smoked Norwegian salmon for domestic consumption in most markets.”

In November, the average export price for fresh whole Norwegian salmon was NOK 27.10 (EUR 3.69) per kg. This is NOK 2.03 (EUR 0.28) higher than in November last year and NOK 1.36 (EUR 0.19) up on the previous month.

The importance of the EU as a market for Norwegian salmon increased in November. Growth in exports to the EU was above average. Among EU countries, Poland led the way with an increase in the volume of exports of no less than 33 per cent. In November, Poland was the second most important market for Norwegian salmon after France, which saw the volume of exports grow by 18 per cent. Total exports to the EU as a whole increased by 16 per cent in November.

Following growth in the volume of exports to Russia in October of 21 per cent, the year-on-year trend turned in November. Compared to November last year, the volume of exports was down by 5 per cent to a total of 13,568 tonnes. However, for the year to date the volume of exports of Norwegian Salmon to Russia shows healthy growth of 33 per cent to a total of 120,000 tonnes.

Exports of Norwegian fjord trout had a good month in November, with the volume of exports up by 611,000 tonnes or 11 per cent compared to November 2011. For the year to date the value of exports of Norwegian fjord trout has totalled NOK 1.5 billion (EUR 204.2 million), an increase of NOK 271 million (EUR 36.9 million) compared to the same period last year.

This growth is mainly attributable to Russia, Japan and Belarus. The average price of fresh whole Norwegian fjord trout in November was NOK 28.34 (EUR 3.86) per kg, slightly down by NOK 0.64 (EUR 0.09) compared to November 2011 but up by NOK 0.77 (EUR 0.10) from the previous month.

Cumulatively for the first two months of the year, shrimp export value totaled USD 690 million, an increase of 20% compared with the same period last year. Compared with the 22% growth recorded in January, the pace of increase in February slowed somewhat, reflecting seasonal factors as the Lunar New Year holiday partially disrupted processing and shipment activities. Nevertheless, the nearly 20% growth in the first two months indicates that shrimp orders from Vietnam are maintaining a more positive trend than in the same period last year.
