Korea, China top markets for Russian fish

(IntraFish) South Korea was Russia's top seafood market in value in 2011, while China bought the highest volume. South Korea bought more than $1 billion (€767 million) worth of seafood from Russia in 2011 -- making it Russia’s most valuable seafood market that year, according to Russian official figures.

In volume, China took the top spot, buying more than 665,000 metric tons of Russian fish and seafood in 2011.Russian seafood exports to China were worth $790 million (€606 million) in 2011, according to the Russian Federal Fish Agency Rosrybolovstvo.

In volume, 2011 exports to South Korea totaled 565,000 metric tons.Along with Japan, South Korea and China and Japan accounted for more than 80 percent of total Russian exports of fish and seafood in 2011.

In species, the most traded item to South Korea was pollock, which accounted for 59 percent of the volume sold (335,000 metric tons).

Liver, caviar and milt roe accounted for 8.2 percent (46 metric tons).Crab accounted for 3.3 percent, at just over 18,000 metric tons, followed by pollock fillets (3.6 percent, or more than 20,000 metric tons), Pacific herring (more than 4.1 percent, around 23,000 metric tons.)

This system is based on the Law on Animal Health, regulations on the prevention and control of aquatic animal diseases, the National Plan for the Prevention and Control of Major Diseases in Farmed Aquatic Species, and environmental monitoring and early warning programs for aquaculture areas.
