Circular economy opens new pathway to enhance pangasius value

News 10:11 31/03/2026 Phuong Linh
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the Mekong Delta, key pangasius farming provinces such as An Giang, Dong Thap, and Can Tho are accelerating the transition toward a circular economy model, contributing to higher product value and reduced environmental impact. Instead of focusing solely on farming and processing, the pangasius value chain is increasingly utilizing by-products and waste streams to generate added value.

A notable feature of this model is the optimization of nearly all stages, from seed production and feed to processing and by-product reuse. In many farming areas in An Giang, pond sludge after each crop is reused as organic fertilizer for rice and other crops, helping increase yields by 0.9–1 ton per hectare while reducing chemical fertilizer use by 30–50%. Beyond cost savings, this practice also improves soil fertility and mitigates environmental pollution.

From a business perspective, Vinh Hoan Corp is among the pioneers in developing a closed-loop, circular production chain. The company has invested in large-scale hatchery operations with high-tech applications, while collecting by-products from farming and processing to produce feed, organic fertilizers, and value-added products such as collagen. The adoption of modern farming practices, disease control, and reduced antibiotic use has also contributed to improving product quality.

In practice, farmers participating in value chain linkages not only secure stable market access but are also guided in applying safe farming practices, water recirculation, and waste reuse. As a result, production costs are reduced and economic efficiency is significantly improved.

According to the fisheries sector’s orientation, developing a circular economy will be a key solution to enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese pangasius. Strengthening the application of science and technology, maximizing the use of by-products, and promoting cooperation among enterprises, farmers, and scientists will not only increase value but also help reduce emissions, protect the environment, and move the industry toward sustainable development.

Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the EU: opportunities remain as the market shifts

 |  09:18 07/10/2026

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The EU remains a critical market for Vietnamese shrimp; however, purchasing demand and import patterns are undergoing notable changes. According to Vietnam Customs data, as of September 15, 2026, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the EU reached nearly $374 million, down 5% year-over-year and accounting for 10.7% of the country’s total shrimp export value. Meanwhile, the EU’s stotal shrimp imports through July 2026 contracted by 7% in volume, exhibiting divergent trends across Southern Europe, Northwestern Europe and Eastern Europe. These dynamics necessitate that Vietnamese enterprises closely monitor individualized market demand, rather than approaching the EU as a monolithic consumer block.
