GENERAL INFORMATION

In Vietnam, the fishery sector plays an important role in the national economy, accounting for about 4-5 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and about 9-10% of national export revenue.

More than 4 millions of people working in the fishery and the growth in production have attributed to the fish exports. Thanks to strongly increase in many years, Vietnam ranks among the top ten seafood suppliers and its seafood products are exported to 170 markets in the world.

Shrimp, pangasius, tuna, squid and octopus are main seafood products exported by the country. In which, shrimp exports create about US$ 3.5 – 4 billion, make up 46-50% of the total seafood sales of Vietnam. Earnings from pangasius reached at US$ 1.7 – 1.8 billion (25% of the total) and exports from Tuna and Cephalopods are US$ 450 – 550 million for each.

Exports to the U.S, Japan, EU, China and South Korea make up 75% of Vietnam’s seafood sales to the wolrd.

Export potentials

Vietnam and China have reached consensus on further bolstering agricultural cooperation.

Vietnam has seen a gradual increase in its proportion of industrial and agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products exported to China, and a reduction in its export of raw materials, fuels, and minerals, heard a forum in Ho Chi Minh City on December 5.

The fifth meeting of a joint committee on economic cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) and the Italian Ministry of Economic Development took place in Rome on December 4.

Joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) offers Vietnam an opportunity to modernise its labour laws and improve labour quality and productivity, heard a workshop in Ho Chi Minh City on December 4.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is expected to create opportunities for Vietnam to expand markets for major exports like wood and timber products, and seafood.

The Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau is exerting efforts to fulfil a target of 1.2 billion USD in export turnover in 2018.

Attracting investment to expand production and upgrade technology is crucial in developing food processing, heard a workshop to promote investment in the industry held in Ho Chi Minh City on November 15 by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The Netherlands is keen on cooperating with the Mekong Delta region and Vietnam in general in boosting commercial agriculture growth in a manner beneficial to both humans and the environment, stated Dutch Ambassador to Vietnam Elsbeth Akkerman on November 9.
