BAP

To promote responsible practices across the aquaculture industry, the Global Aquaculture Alliance coordinates the development of Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification standards for hatcheries, farms, processing facilities and feed mills. 

The BAP program drives continued improvements via high standards that deliver significant benefits industrywide. The BAP standards cover aquaculture facilities for a variety of finish and crustacean species, as well as mussels.

VIET GAP

To contribute to promoting aquaculture seafood, agriculture products and food safety in general and fruit and vegetable for consumption in the country in particular and exports, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued the Criteria VietGAP on 01/28/2008.

VietGAP (Vietnamese Good Agriculture Practices): Practices good agriculture production in Vietnam is based on 04 criteria, such as Standard on production techniques; Food safety including measures to ensure no chemical contamination or physical contamination during harvesting; Working environment aims to prevent abuse of the labor of farmers; Product traceability. 

On 31 December 2015, all commercial fish farms must apply and be certified by VietGAP or other international certifications under Decree No. 36/2014/ND-CP dated 29/04/2014 about farming, processing and export of pangasius products. The Decree comes into force on 20 June 2014. The certification program is encouraged in farming many other fishes in Vietnam.

Certifications

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In 2020, the country's seafood production has reached 8.4 million tons, a slight increase of 3% compared to 2019, of which aquaculture accounts for 54% with nearly 4.6 million tons. accounting for 46% with over 3.8 million tons. Seafood exports reached 8.4 billion USD, down 1.9% compared to 2019, of which aquaculture (shrimp, pangasius) accounted for 62% with 5.2 billion USD, captured seafood accounted for 38% with 3.2 billion USD.

Vietnam is one of the biggest producers of ASC certified seafood with hundreds of certified farms, but one company still managed to achieve a first for the country last year.

By 2045, fisheries will be a modern commercial economy, a deep seafood processing hub, which belongs to the group of three leading countries in the world.

Despite the difficulties, Vietnamese tuna processing and exporting enterprises have still been making efforts to overcome drawbacks.

With the average seafood import demand of 4.1-4.5 billion USD/year, Vietnam seafood has great room to increase exports to the UK market thanks to the push from the UKVFTA Free Trade Agreement.

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is updating its variance requests (VR) process, a move that will give shareholders and NGOs the opportunity to contribute to decisions on local variances to the ASC standards.

The Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification program continued to grow in 2019, with 2,681 BAP-certified processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills worldwide by the end of the year. That’s up almost 15 percent from the program’s 2018 count, according to the GAA’s annual report.

The central province of Quang Tri is building internationally-certified and high-tech shrimp farming zones in order to raise its shrimp value from 550 billion VND (23.9 million USD) to over 1 trillion VND.

Up to 30 shrimp farming cooperatives in the Mekong Delta provinces of Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau have achieved the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification on responsible aquaculture.

The southernmost province of Ca Mau plans to develop extensive crab farming, especially in ecological environment, to improve its economic value and serve exports, said Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Chau Cong Bang.
