NAFIQAD guided exporters to implement new Canadian import requirements for aquatic animals

(vasep.com.vn) On January 31st 2013, National Agro–Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (NAFIQAD) has promulgated the official letter No. 185/QLCL-CL1.

The official letter informed and instructed exporters to apply Canada’s new requirements on quarantining imported aquatic animal destined for direct human consumption.

According to Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), since April 8th 2013, some aquatic animals and seafood products imported into Canada for human consumption must meet Canada’s aquatic animal health requirements as follows:

- All imports of items to Canada for human consumption which subjected to Canada’s new requirements include: aquatic animals (finfish, crustaceans, mollusks) in whole round, live or dead, Finfish with no viscera such as finfish fillet, shrimp tail on, shell-less mollusks or partly shell-less mollusks are not subjected to the requirements.

- Consignments of aquatic animals will be required an import permit issued by CFIA to enter the country. Importers must contact with CFIA to register and receive import permit. Besides, imported consignments require health certification (HC) from the country of origin.

- CFIA informed that the date of application of the requirements was the date of landing. Thus, exported consignments to Canada subjected to new requirements must be enclosed with HC since April 8th 2013.
