Vietnam's shrimp sector has been reaping the benefits of the country’s successful containment of the COVID-19 outbreak, with growth seen in export and farming activities.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In May 2020, Soc Trang, Vietnam-based shrimp exporter Fimex (Sao Ta) returned to operate normally, processed 1,760 MT of finished shrimp products, equaling to 105% compared to the the previous year.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam's shrimp exports in the first three months of 2020 reached US$ 628.6 million, a slight increase of 1.8% compared to the same period in 2019. In particular, shrimp exports to the US market in the first 3 months of 2020 recorded the most positive growth among the main importers. Amid export disruption in many markets due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, this is an encouraging growth for Vietnamese enterprises.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the 5 years (2015-2019), Vietnam's shrimp industry has achieved positive results in production and export. Shrimp farming area increased by an average of 1.4% per year, while production rose by an average of 5.7% annually, mainly due to improved whiteleg shrimp productivity. The production of whiteleg shrimp elevated sharply by nearly 41% after 5 years with an average increase of 9% per year. Meanwhile, black tiger shrimp production went up by an average of 1.2% and only increased by 3.1% after 5 years; productivity did not have a significant growth compared to whiteleg shrimp.

The European Council on Monday ratified a free trade agreement with Vietnam that promises to reduce tariffs on Vietnamese shrimp from the current 12% to 20% rates to zero after seven years, Vietnam News reports.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Australia was the seventh largest shrimp importer of Vietnam, accounting for 3.8% of Vietnam's total shrimp export value to markets. After declining in 2018, Vietnamese shrimp exports to Australia in 2019 grew positively.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In 2020, Kien Giang province strives to reach 85,000 MT of shrimp production, providing raw materials for processing and exports, with a total shrimp farming area of about 120,000 hectares.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After positive growth in 4 months from May to August, Vietnamese shrimp exports to the US in September 2019 decreased by 18% to US $ 64.7 million. As of October 15, 2019, shrimp exports to this market reached US$510.5 million, up 1.2% over the same period in 2018.

On 16 January 2020, Minh Phu Group (MPG) became aware, through press and media sources, that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Department (CBP) has officially initiated a formal investigation of the alleged evasion of anti-dumping duties (AD duties) by MSeafood, a U.S subsidiary of MPG (the EAPA Investigation). MPG also learned that the CBP applied preliminary measures (the Decision) in accordance with the complaint from the Ad Hoc Shrimp Trade Enforcement Committee (AHSTEC). As of the date of this press release, MPG and MSeafood have not yet received any official document from CBP in relation to this matter.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Canada is currently the 6th largest shrimp importer of Vietnam, accounting for 4.3% of the total export value of Vietnamese shrimp to markets. In recent years, Vietnamese shrimp exports to Canada have grown unsteadly. Notwithstanding, Canada is still considered as a potential market of Vietnamese shrimp.

The EU is a potential market for Vietnam's shrimp industry next year because it is the largest shrimp market in the world, while the shrimp production of this bloc has not met its demand, according to domestic seafood experts.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After decling in the first months of 2019, Vietnamses shrimp exports to China began to recover from May to August with double-digit growth. In August 2019, Vietnamses shrimp exports to China rose by 30% to US$ 51.4 million. In the first eight months of 2019, shrimp exports to this market reached US$336.5 million, up 5% over the same period in 2018.
