Vietnam, Thailand forge joint commitment to eliminate IUU fishing
During a recent meeting in Thailand, the prime ministers of Thailand and Vietnam reaffirmed their commitment to suppressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
In addition, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha issued a joint statement on the recent progress made by their countries regarding IUU fishing, Viet Nam News reported.
“The Prime Minister of Thailand expressed firm support for Vietnam’s recent initiative in preventing and suppressing IUU fishing. The Prime Minister of Vietnam welcomed Thailand’s assistance in sharing Thailand’s experience of the combat against IUU fishing with Vietnam,” Viet Nam News said.
Both prime ministers commended the ongoing joint Navy patrol and the recent nomination of the Point of Contact (POC) between Thailand Maritime Enforcing Coordination Center (THAI- MECC) and Vietnam’s Coast Guard.
The two countries are also cooperating on IUU fishing with a joint working group that addresses illegal fishing matters. The prime ministers highlighted the importance of exchanging information on maritime security.
