Vietnam fresh/frozen squid took large share in Israel imports

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Except for the fall in February 2017, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to Israel increased continuously from February to September this year. In QIII/2017, sales to this market grew by 85% to hit US$2.9 million. The figure in the first 9 months of this year estimated at US$6.5 million, up 92.4% over the same period in 2016. Israel currently held as the largest buyer of Vietnam cephalopod, accounting for 1.4% in Vietnam's total exports to markets.

Israel was the 7th largest squid importer of Vietnam in the first nine months of this year. The country currently increased imports of Vietnam squid, especially fresh and frozen items. In the period, Vietnam’s squid exports to Israel increased compared with the same period in 2016. According to statistics of Vietnam Customs, sales of fresh and frozen squid accounted for 91% of total cephalopod export value to this market; followed by other processed squid with about 8% and dried squid with a small share.

Despite a rise in cephalopod imports from Vietnam, Israel is tending to decrease imports from other countries in the world. Total imports of this product into Israel in the first 7 months of 2017 reached US$1.4 million, down 47.9% over the same period in 2016.

This year, Israel tended to reduce imports of frozen/dried/salted squid; fresh/live/chilled squid; processed octopus while it increased those of processed squid; fresh/live/chilled octopus; frozen/dried/salted octopus. Imports of processed squid and fresh/live/chilled octopus in the first 7 months of the year grew impressively by 196% and 310% respectively over the same period last year.

Israel currently imported cephalopod from 7 countries around the world. In particular, Vietnam was currently the largest supplier of cephalopod to this market, followed by Taipei (China) and India. Imports from these countries accounted for 58.2%, 14.9% and 13.8% respectively in the first 7 months of this year.

Israel is considered as a potential market of Vietnam thanks to its market-oriented economy, which is growing well. Israeli consumers are increasingly interested in the quality and price of products. For frozen squid products, Vietnam has an advantage in this market with its large market share and competitive prices.

In the past 2 years, the average import price of frozen squid from Vietnam to Israel has fluctuated at over US$5.8/kg, while that from China ranged from US$6.5 to 8.6/kg, that from Thailand was over US$6.3/kg.
