Seafood output hits 2.3 million tonnes in eight months

Vietnam’s total output of caught fish in the first eight months of 2017 reached nearly 2.3 million tonnes, up 3.4 percent year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Of the figure 2.16 million tonnes were caught from the sea, a rise of 3.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

The ministry attributed the increases to the favourable weather conditions and localities’ support to fishermen.

However, it said that tuna catch in Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa dropped nearly 17 percent in August to only 832 tonnes.

In the first eight months of this year, total tuna catch was estimated at 14,901 tonnes, up 10.6 percent year on year.

Binh Dinh took the lead with 8,508 tonnes, a rise of 18.9 percent, followed by Phu Yen 3,410 tonnes (up 6.1 percent) and Khanh Hoa 2,983 tonnes (down 2 percent).
