Positive growth in Vietnam cephalopod sales to Thailand

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) While seafood exports encounter difficulties selling to the EU, many Vietnamese cephalopod enterprises currently shifted their exports to Thailand. The country was the seventh largest importer of cephalopod in the world and also the largest buyer in ASEAN which currently increased imports from Vietnam.

According to statistics of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to Thailand in the first four months of this hit nearly US$24 million, up 21% over the same period last year.

In terms of volume, imports of processed squid products into Thailand accounted the highest proportion of over 50% in total import volume of cephalopod into Thailand; followed by frozen squid products. However, in terms of value, frozen squid is the most imported product, while processed squid ranked the second. Compared with the same period last year, imports of squid and octopus products into Thailand were on the upward trend.

In the first 4 months of 2018, Thailand imported cephalopod from 10 countries in the world. Among them, China, Vietnam and Cambodia were the three biggest suppliers. However, in terms of the market share, China and Vietnam were the two main exporters to this market.

While China was the largest supplier of processed cephalopod to the Thai market, Vietnam was the largest supplier of frozen cephalopod to the country. Therefore, in terms of the export value, Vietnam was leading seller to this market.

The average import price of frozen cephalopod into Thailand from countries in the first four months ranged from US$4.76 to US$10/kg, of which that from Vietnam was US$5.44-US$10/kg.

For processed squid, the average import price into Thailand was currently around US$2.4-US$2.89/kg.
