The Peruvian Ministry of Production (Produce) has set a maximum total allowable catch limit for hake at 47,129 metric tons, 21% up compared to the 2013 quota.
The hake season — running from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 — will allow catches from the northern tip under the Peruvian maritime domain to the 06°00′ south latitude.
Shipowners holding fishing licenses will be allocated a maximum catch limit per vessel, while artisanal vessels will not be subject to the allocation of a catch limit.
By the end of April, Produce brought forward 5,000t of the season’s quota of 2014-15, due to the sustained recovery of stock in the north coast of Peru.
Back in April, a report carried out by commercial fishing vessels and using the same methodology as that of Imarpe showed Peruvian hake stock is recovering since it found the resource’s biomass could exceed 500,000t.
Extra official requests of the industry was a quota of 70,000t — which is 79% higher when compared to last year’s quota.
