Ca Mau is now home to 4,965 fishing vessels with the combined capacity of 375,711HP, of which more than 1,200 vessels have the capacity of 90HP upwards. The provincial fishing production amounts to 150,000MT per year.
Documenting of seafood origin will help competent authorities to better manage fishing and fisheries resource protection activities, control fishing grounds, and improve fishers’ skill. At the same time, this will help fishers selling their products with higher benefit and expanding export markets for local seafood products.
The provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) has organized training workshops for officials responsible for fisheries resource inspection and protection in the districts of Song Doc, Cai Doi Vam, Khanh Hoi, Rach Goc, etc. The trainees then help fishers fill in the certificate of origin of wild-caught seafood immediately in the fishing ground, instruct fishing vessel owners, captains, and fishing fleet members, purchasing units on how to update information, document on post-harvest seafood origin, location of the fishing zone, seafood categories, and other issues related to EC’s regulation on IUU fishing prevention.
In the first quarter of 2010, Ca Mau completed training for fishing vessel owners and captains of more than 1,200 powerful fishing vessels, 130 purchasing units, and around 30 seafood processors at the locality.
