Phuong Nam: Shortage of large-sized raw shrimp

 Phuong Nam is now facing the shortage of shrimp material, especially estra large shrimp 8/12 and 13/15 count, because the intensive shrimp farming season already ended, while the harvest of extensive one has not started, reported Mr. Nguyen Manh Thanh, a staff in the business department. Besides, sales prices of shrimp of all sizes have been increasing remarkably. The demand for large-sized black tiger shrimp in foreign markets is increasing strongly, but the local supply is limited despite great efforts of processors to speed up purchasing, Thanh added. Phuong Nam is mainly exporting large-sized black tiger shrimp to the U.S., which accounted for around 40-45 percent of the company’s total shrimp export value.

According to Vietnam Customs, in the first ten months of this year, Phuong Nam Co., Ltd shipped nearly 5,300MT of shrimp for a value of US$54 million. Though the daily capacity is around 120MT of material per day, the company sometimes processed only 20MT of material per day due to the shortage of material and decreasing demand in key markets. Consequently, the shrimp export volume in the last two months of the year will be lower than in previous months. Thanh also revealed the company will import materials to meet increasing demand from customers; however, it is difficult to import large-sized shrimp when the supplies of such product from some neighboring countries such as Indonesia and India are limited.
