Ms. Pham Anh Dao, Chief of Phu Cuong’s Business Department said due to a severe shortage of raw material, the company could operate at 50 percent or even 5-10 percent at times, of its designed capacity in recent months.
The company is expected to face a severer shortage of shrimp material in the first months of next year.
The limitation of shrimp production has push up raw materials price, creating more opportunities for farmers, however, bringing numerous difficulties for both processors and workers. Many processors have to decline orders from customers due to their inability to ensure enough material. Meanwhile, workers are worried of laid-off and decreasing income.
Phu Cuong now employs about 500 workers, a 150 fewer than that of the same period last year.
In response to a severe shortage of shrimp material in the coming months, many seafood processors in the Mekong Delta have to purchase material from other provinces, or import from other countries such as Indonesia or India.
Ca Mau now has 264,500ha of shrimp farm, including around 1,300ha of intensive farming, 2,200ha of modified extensive farming; the remaining is for low-yield traditional extensive farming.
