Aquaculture output of the city is expected to reach 221,000 MT by 2014; 269,000 MT by 2016 and 335,000 MT by 2020.
Can Tho is stepping up research and transfer of advanced technology in intensive aquaculture, producing disease-free seed. The city also plans to apply innovated technology in processing; ensure food safety and hygiene; build brand name for aquatic products and transfer modern technology in treating aquaculture waste.
The city applies training programs and trials in communes and hamlets with an aim to instructing farmers to farm fish under GAP, SGF 1000 CM standards in compliance with food safety standards such as HACCP, ISO.
By 2015, Can Tho will build further 10 plants with total capacity of 122,000 MT per year and more 6 plants by 2020.
With total capacity of seafood processing of 192,000 MT per year, production of processed seafood is planned to reach 120,000 MT through 2015 and 160,000 MT by 2020.
Key exported products of the locality are IQF shrimp; HLSO, HOSO, PUD, PD shrimp and other value-added products such as Sushi, Nobashi, fried breaded shrimp, breaded shrimp, dumpling, spring roll.
Exported finfish products are IQF fish in blocks, frozen butterfly fish, fried breaded fish fillet, breaded fish fillet, bloating fried dried pangasius, products processed from tilapia, knifefish, squid.
