Ca Mau province has a vision by 2030 to develop an area of about 250,810 hectares for black tiger shrimp farming, and 9,190 hectares for vannamei shrimp farming. The output of both types of farming reached over 328,000 tons/year. To meet these goals, the demand for quality shrimp seed for production is very large. Specifically, there are about 27.8 billion fingerlings of black tiger shrimp and about 23.5 billion whiteleg shrimp.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau province, the locality has an annual aquaculture area of about 300,000 ha; in which over 280,000 ha is the shrimp farming area. The demand for seed in Ca Mau reached nearly 42 billion seeds in 2022 to meet all types of farming such as: intensive farming, super intensive farming, improved extensive farming, extensive farming, shrimp - rice, shrimp - forest.
Meanwhile, the province's shrimp seed production capacity is only up to 21 billion, falling short of more than 50% of the province's farming needs. The management of shrimp seed imported into the province is still difficult due to the large area and some of the imported shrimp seed with unclear origin and unsatisfactory quality. Ca Mau often imports shrimp seed from outside the province, mainly the Central region with about 20-23 billion shrimp/year; in which about 70% is white leg shrimp.
Ca Mau's shrimp seed production capacity is only up to 21 billion, only meet nearly 50% of the province's farming needs
Over the past time, the People's Committee of Ca Mau province has cooperated with relevant departments, branches and coordinated with suppliers to manage and strictly control the origin of seed imported into the province. These tasks are to ensure the quality of the seed, preventing any disease coming from the fingerlings to improve productivity and efficiency of aquaculture in Ca Mau.
In particular, the Provincial People's Committee has issued the Project on Development of Seed Production to serve the agricultural restructuring of the province in the period of 2023-2030. Ca Mau orients to develop the production of aquatic breeds, agricultural plant varieties and livestock breeds in order to actively control the production of seed for aquaculture in the province.
Provincial departments, branches and People's Committees of districts, cities and relevant units are responsible for closely coordinating with the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to implement the project to ensure the set goals.
