Ca Mau develops an international certified shrimp farming model

Mr. Le Thanh Trieu, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau Province, said that the province will develop shrimp farming in a modern direction on the basis of accelerating the application of science to improve productivity, quality and efficiency, food safety and hygiene and environmental protection. Along with that, Ca Mau province invests in developing production in depth, promoting intensive farming to increase productivity, striving to maintain the leading position in shrimp farming nationwide.

By 2025, Ca Mau province will keep a stable shrimp farming area of ​​about 280,000 ha with the output reaching 700,000 tons, having an average increase of 3.5%/year.

The province will build 5 super-intensive shrimp farming areas with 1,000 hectares of super-intensive shrimp farming area achieving international certification and simultaneously develop the areas of intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming concentrating in areas with favorable conditions with about 10,000 ha; of which 500 hectares achieving international certification.

The province plans to develop improved extensive shrimp farming by 2025 to reach around 200,000 hectares and 20,000 hectares of organic shrimp farming; in which, striving to have 10,000 ha of international certification.

In addition, the province promotes the development of rice-shrimp rotational farming. This is a suitable model for the soil conditions of Ca Mau, contributing to increasing shrimp production. The province aims to develop 40,000 hectares of rice-shrimp rotational farming by 2025; of which 10,000 hectares are cultured under certified organic form.

Besides, Ca Mau province focuses on developing the shrimp - forest model, with the main object being tiger shrimp.

Currently, Ca Mau province has 19,000 hectares assessed and certified for shrimp farming according to international standards such as Naturland, BAP, EU, Selva Shrimp and VietGap, with about 4,200 households participating in the farming model, certified shrimp production produces over 10,000 tons/year.

In the period of 2014-2020, the total fishery output of the province increased by 4.1%/year on average. Particularly in 2020, the total fishery output was estimated at 600,000 tons; in which shrimp production was estimated at 210,000 tons, an average increase of 4.7%/year.

In recent years, Ca Mau province has focused on developing shrimp farming following international standards such as GlobalGAP, Naturland, BAP, EU, ASC, Selva Shrimp, VietGAP ... At the same time, the province is also promoting contracts to link businesses with value chain farming areas, providing conditions to get international certification.

Every year, the province has more than 20 enterprises signing and maintaining over 60 cooperative contracts for the development of the value chain of the shrimp industry with 23 cooperatives and cooperative groups to supply inputs and build internationally certified raw material areas.These linkage contracts are not only to supply inputs associated with the processing and sale of products, but also to jointly develop an internationally certified raw material area.
