Ba Ria - Vung Tau towards the sustainable capture fisheries

Fishery Profile 10:57 17/04/2017
Ba Ria - Vung Tau is one of the most important coastal provinces in the South East of Viet Nam, having a long-standing fishery with fishing grounds of over 100 square kilometers. The province's total capture fisheries output has maintained an average annual growth of 3.48%, from over 250 thousand tons in 2010 to nearly 300 thousand tons in 2016. Fishing fleet of the province has about 6,277 fishing vessels with a total capacity of more than 1.4 million horse power (hp). In addition, under the Decree No. 67/2014/NĐ-CP on fisheries development policies, the province has decided to approve the construction of 119 vessels, upgrading capacity to over 800 hp for 77 vessels.

The structure of provincial fishing sector is shifted towards multi-fishing methods and encouraged to develop highly efficient and selective fishing methods for the protection of marine resources and marine ecological environment. The province now has more than 170 enterprises manufacturing and processing aquatic products with a designed capacity of 150 thousand tons of products per year, creating jobs and stable income for tens of thousands of locals. Currently, the fishery products of the province have been available in more than 50 countries and territories, with the seafood export turnover reaching about USD 300 million per year.

Implementing the "Vietnam Fisheries Development Strategy to 2020" approved by the Government, the province aims at building and developing a sustainable fisheries sector, in which the province continues to focus on rearranging the capture fisheries sector towards modernization, eliminating the destructive fishing which negatively affects the fishery resources. Besides, the province tries to reduce the number of fishing vessels under 90 hp operating in coastal areas and gradually increases the number of off-shore fishing vessels with a capacity of over 90 hp. The province sets target to 2020, the fishing fleet would be about 5,000 vessels with a total capacity of 1 million hp. The province also promotes the development of new off-shore fishing vessels, raising the efficiency of fishing together with protection of national sovereignty and security. In addition, it is necessary to accelerate the construction of Go Gang Fisheries Center (Vung Tau City). Not only for landing site, the fishery center also has functional areas for repairing and producing fishing gear, building and repairing high capacity vessels, storm shelter, fishing vessel registration center, fishery control, surveillance and rescue.
