GENERAL INFORMATION

Vietnam, with a coastline of over 3,260 kilometers (km) and more than 3,000 islands and islets scattered offshore, plus up to 2,860 rivers and estuaries, has been geographically endowed with ideal conditions for the thriving fishery sector which currently exists.

Great potential of fishery sector in Vietnam is embedded in water bodies of 1.700.000 ha in which 811.700 ha freshwater, 635.400 ha brackish waters and 125.700 ha coves and 300.000 - 400.000 ha wetland areas might be employed for aquaculture development.

The Mekong River Delta in the south and the Red River Delta in the north have been used for wild catch fishing as well as extensive fish farming.

Shrimp and pangasius mostly farmed in the Mekong River Delta, in which, shrimp farmes located in coastal provinces such as Tra Vinh, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Ben Tre..

Pangasius farming is developing in many provinces in Mekong River Delta such as Can Tho, Vinh Long, Tien Giang, An Giang, Dong Thap, Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Tra Vinh....

Production in the fishery sector grew at an average rate of 7.05% from 1991 to 2000, and 10% from 2001 to now. Vietnamese fisheries production increased steadily YoY. Aquaculture output tent to sharply rise while capture ouput tend to slow down. In 2023, aquaculture occupied 59%, fishing output occupied 41%. From 2018-2023, ratio of fishing output has decreased from 46% to 41% of total fishery production in Vietnam. In 2023, total aquaculture area was 5.408 million tons, up 3.5%; total fishing output was 3.861 million tons, equal to 2022.

Vietnam aquaculture production up 7.4% in Sep 2016

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In Sep 2016, Vietnam’s aquaculture output estimated at 319 thousand MT, up 7.4% compared to the same period last year. The figure in Jan-Sep 2016 estimated at 2,621 thousand MT, up 1.8% year on year.

In the first 9 months this year, the area for pangasius farming in Mekong Delta estimated at 5,146 hectares, down 2.3% over the same period last year. Pangasius production reached 860,911 MT, up 2.5% year on year thanks to higher output in some localities such as Dong Thap province with 285,554 MT (up 6.8%), and Can Tho province with 118,035 MT (up 27.2 %).

In Sep 2016, the area for shrimp farming and the production reached positive results thanks to favourable weather condition, stable price of raw shrimp.

According to local reports, as of 20th Sep 2016, the area for black tiger shrimp farming in the country estimated at 582.7 thousand hectares, an increase of 0.6%, with the production of 174.4 thousand MT, down 2.5% year on year. In particular, the area for black ​​tiger shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta provinces estimated at 562,501 hectares (up 1.3%), with the output of 169,012 MT (down 4.7%).

Total area for whiteleg shrimp farming in the country hit 80 thousand hectares, up 6.3%, with the volume of at 200 thousand MT, up 4.2% year on year. Of that, the area in the Mekong Delta reached 62.3 thousand hectares (up 18.3%), with the output of 151.7 thousand MT, up 11.1%. Thanks to the short farming period, higher yield and stable prices, many households turn to whiteleg shrimp farming. Therefore, the area for ​​white shrimp farming increased sharply from early this year.
