GENERAL INFORMATION

Vietnam, with a coastline of over 3,260 kilometers (km) and more than 3,000 islands and islets scattered offshore, plus up to 2,860 rivers and estuaries, has been geographically endowed with ideal conditions for the thriving fishery sector which currently exists.

Great potential of fishery sector in Vietnam is embedded in water bodies of 1.700.000 ha in which 811.700 ha freshwater, 635.400 ha brackish waters and 125.700 ha coves and 300.000 - 400.000 ha wetland areas might be employed for aquaculture development.

The Mekong River Delta in the south and the Red River Delta in the north have been used for wild catch fishing as well as extensive fish farming.

Shrimp and pangasius mostly farmed in the Mekong River Delta, in which, shrimp farmes located in coastal provinces such as Tra Vinh, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Ben Tre..

Pangasius farming is developing in many provinces in Mekong River Delta such as Can Tho, Vinh Long, Tien Giang, An Giang, Dong Thap, Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Tra Vinh....

Production in the fishery sector grew at an average rate of 7.05% from 1991 to 2000, and 10% from 2001 to now. Vietnamese fisheries production increased steadily YoY. Aquaculture output tent to sharply rise while capture ouput tend to slow down. In 2023, aquaculture occupied 59%, fishing output occupied 41%. From 2018-2023, ratio of fishing output has decreased from 46% to 41% of total fishery production in Vietnam. In 2023, total aquaculture area was 5.408 million tons, up 3.5%; total fishing output was 3.861 million tons, equal to 2022.

Duyen Hai (Tra Vinh): seafood production reaches over VND 1,724 billion

(vasep.com.vn) With the increase in both scale and quality, total seafood production in 2014 is anticipated at over VND 1,724 billion, up VND 297 billion year on year. 62,856 MT of fish and shrimp are produced, up 10,219 MT year on year. Aquaculture production is 29,206 MT, up 5,069 MT year on year. This includes 7,530 MT of black tiger shrimp, 6,743 MT of white shrimp MT, with 6,685 MT of crab.

In 2014, about 1.356 billion black tiger shrimp seeds are grown in 10,701 farms, covering the area of over 14,120 hectares. Profit is reported by 8,554 farms growing black tiger shrimp.  

Meanwhile, 797 million whiteleg shrimp posts are grown in 1,114 hectares by 1,830 farms. With the average yield of 2.62 MT/hectare, 1,236 farms earned profit.

Around 85.5 million crabs are grown by 8,673 farms, covering an area of 12,160 hectares. Another 2,846 farms grow aquaculture varieties.

The total aquaculture investment in the district in 2014 is more than VND 1,312 billion; in which VND 1,070 billion are mobilized by farmers and loans are of VND 242 billion.

Duyen Hai district has made its own  target for 2015, according to which, 63,430 MT of shrimp and fish will be produced. Particularly, aquaculture production will reach 29,880 MT, constisting of 7,200 MT of black tiger shrimp, 7,000 MT of whiteleg shrimp, 7,000 MT of crabs, 230 MT blue crayfish, 5,500 MT of farmed fish, 450 MT of mollusks, and 33,550 MT of marine fish.
