November 25, 2016, 08:37 AM
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the U.S. and China showed the steady growth in the first 10 months of this year. If it keeps the current growth and technical barriers to pangasius shipments to the U.S, in 2017, China - Hong Kong expected to become the leading importer of Vietnam’s pangasius.

The U.S

As of Oct 016, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the U.S valued at US$319.8 million, accounting for 23% of total exports, and up 22.7% over the same period last year. The exports in Oct 2016 registered the good growth of 19% compared to the same period in 2015. So far, the impact of the USDA catfish inspection program have not affected on Vietnam’s export activities yet. However, in 2017, exports to this market forecasted to get more difficult, the export value will not grow as strongly as that in 2016 due to impacts of the USDA catfish inspection program and high anti-dumping duty.

The EU

Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the EU in Jan-Oct 2016 reached US$217.7 million, down 11.5% from the same period last year. Of that, exports to the 4 largest buyers in the bloc, including the Netherlands, the UK, Spain and Germany showed the year-on-year declines of 11.2%; 1.9%; 15.2% and 5%, respectively. Total pangasius exports of Viet Nam to the market in 2016 (by value) forecasted to decrease by 12% compared to 2015.

China – Hong Kong

Through Oct 2016, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to China - Hong Kong totaled US$235.5 million, up 76% compared to the same period last year. Exports to this market posted the good growth in 2 consecutive years. So far, the import demand for pangasius in China remains strong. According to Vietnam Trade Promotion Office in Chongqing, China, the import demand for pangasius in China remains high thanks to a reasonable price. China mainly imports pangasius for processing fast-food in restaurants, hotels, canteens, as well as flights. With this growth, in the coming time, China expected to become the biggest buyer of Vietnam’s pangasius.

Other importing markets

ASEAN is a potential importing market of Vietnam pangasius but the growth began to slow down. As of Oct 2016, Vietnam pangasius exports to this market reached US$112 million, an increase of 0.02% over the same period last year. Exports to top 3 importers in the region, including Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines remained stable over the same period in 2015.
