The exports of key products also improved better than the same period last year. The rise is attributable that exports to major markets such as the U.S., EU and Japan has recovered.

Vietnam’s tuna exports to Japan have dropped for four consecutive years since 2013 partly due to high import tariff at 6.4 percent – 7.2 percent.

According to statistics of General Department of Vietnam Customs, tuna export value in the first month of this year reached almost US$34 million, down 8% compared with the same period in 2016. In particular, fresh/frozen/live tuna (HS code 03) accounted for 51.9% in total export value.

In 2016, Israel is an important market of Vietnam tuna exporters. Vietnam tuna sales to the market reached US$26 million, up 50% compared to the same period of 2015. This is the 4th largest importer of Vietnam tuna.

According to statistics of the International Trade Centre (ITC), as of Oct 2016, tuna imports into ASEAN countries reached US$1.3 billion, up 25% compared to the same period of 2015.

Vietnam exported around 200 million USD worth of tuna products to the US in 2016, representing a year-on-year increase of 5 percent.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The US stays as the 2nd largest tuna importer in the world, behind Japan, and accounting for 11-13% of the world's tuna imports. This country is also the largest buyer of Vietnam’s tuna. However, in the last 2 years, tuna imports into the US were unstable.

In Jan-Aug 2016, Italy’s tuna imports totaled US$563 million, up 5.3% compared to the same period in 2015. In late 2016, thanks to higher demand for holidays, tuna imports into the country expected to continue the rise.

The Vietnam Directorate of Fisheries and the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) jointly launched a training course on protecting dolphins during fishing tuna in Phu Yen province on December 13.
