Tuna exports to Japan continue positive growth in the third quarter of 2022

Accumulating in the first 9 months of 2022, tuna export turnover to Japan reached US$31 million, up 49% over the same period in 2021, 1.5 times higher than the same period in 2019.

Vietnam mainly exports frozen tuna meat/loin products with HS code 0304 to Japan. Next is the group of other processed tuna products, including frozen steamed skipjack/yellowfin tuna loin, frozen steamed skipjack tuna, etc. Compared to the same period, exports of tuna products from Vietnam to Japan increased, except for canned tuna.

Japan's tuna import demand will only increase slightly in the last months of the year. 

Currently, there are 32 Vietnamese enterprises participating in exporting tuna to the Japanese market. In which, Mariso Vietnam, Evertrust Foods Co., Ltd and FoodTech are the top 3 tuna exporters to this market in the first 9 months of 2022.

According to statistics of the World Trade Center (ITC), Japan's tuna imports decreased continuously in the first 7 months of 2022. Currently, the inflation rate in Japan has increased to the highest level in the past 8 years.

Therefore, Japan’s tuna import demand will only increase slightly in volume in the last months of the year. Consumer demand for high-priced tuna products at the end of 2022 is likely to decrease in comparison to the previous years. The rising high inflation and the depreciation of the Yen cause imports in USD more expensive. Vietnam's tuna exports to Japan are expected to continue to increase in the last quarter of the year, but the growth rate will slow down.
