(seafood. vasep.com.vn) After the year-on-year decline in 2015, demand for shrimp imports into Japan was more positive in the early 2016. Shrimp imports into the market in Jan-Aug 2016 reached the volume of 132,198 MT, worth by US$1.4 billion; up 4.6% and 0.8%, respectively.
According to the International Trade Center (ITC), Vietnam is still the largest shrimp supplier to Japan with the proportion of 23% out of Japan’s total shrimp import value.
Frozen shrimp accounted for 90% of total shrimp consumption in Japan. Japan mainly imports frozen shrimp from South East Asia countries like Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
In Jan-May 2016, Indonesia was the largest supplier of frozen shrimp to Japan, followed by Vietnam and India. Imports of the item from Vietnam in the period reported the higher growth than those from Indonesia.
Vietnam shrimp exports to Japan in Aug 2016 reported the increase of 3.2% from Aug 2015 and the rise of 12.7% from Jul 2016.
According to Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, since Sep 13th 2016, Japan reduced checking Chloramphenicol on shrimp imported from Vietnam from 100% to 30% because they don’t detect Chloramphenicol on Vietnamese shrimp in the recent time.
The antidumping duty on Indian shrimp exported to the U.S. has been reduced to 2.2% which may encourage Indian enterprises to boost shrimp exports to the U.S. and reduce their market share in Japan.
Vietnam shrimp exports to Japan in the year end are expected to rise slightly.
