Ho Chi Minh City: Applying Hi-tech and water recirculation in super-intensive shrimp farming

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In Ho Chi Minh City, many exporters and cooperatives are promoting the super-intensive recirculating shrimp farming model, contributing to higher productivity, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

Phuoc Hai Seafood Joint Stock Company is one of the pioneers in applying biotechnology and a closed water recirculation system on an area of 5 hectares, with an investment capital of VND 102 billion. Thanks to modern equipment imported from the US, automatic environmental control, wastewater treatment and reuse with zero discharge, the company achieves a yield of 80 tons/ha/crop—16 times higher than traditional methods. With three crops per year, annual revenue reaches VND 20–30 billion. Phuoc Hai’s clean shrimp has been exported to Europe, Japan, South Korea, and the US, certified by international ASC and BAP standards.

Similarly, Quyet Thang Agricultural Cooperative has invested VND 5 billion in implementing the RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) model for indoor shrimp farming. With an area of 100 hectares, the cooperative farms three crops per year, achieving 25–30 tons/ha/crop and generating annual revenue of VND 15–18 billion.

In early 2025, Ho Chi Minh City issued a plan for developing a circular economy in agriculture through 2030. In aquaculture, the goal by 2030 is to treat and reuse 50% of wastewater and sludge, and to increase the value added of industry chains by at least 20%.

The application of recirculating technology has proven highly effective, contributing to building a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable shrimp farming industry.
