Ca Mau accelerates shrimp farming certification to enhance export value

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Cà Mau actively promotes sustainable and environmentally friendly shrimp farming models such as shrimp-forest and shrimp-rice, aiming to enhance the value and competitiveness of exported shrimp. The province focuses on adopting international standards like ASC, BAP, GlobalGAP, and Organic to meet the increasingly stringent requirements of global markets.

Ca Mau currently has a total aquaculture area of approximately 300,000 hectares, of which around 280,000 hectares are dedicated to shrimp farming. The province is committed to developing aquaculture practices that are nature-based, chemical-free, non-GMO and environmentally responsible.

As of the end of 2024, roughly 22,590 hectares of shrimp farming in Ca Mau had received international certifications - mainly under shrimp - woodland and shrimp - rice models. Notably, the shrimp - forest model in Tan An Tay Commune (Ngoc Hien district) was awarded the “ASC Group” certification by Bureau Veritas, marking the first and largest group certification for the shrimp - mangrove model in both Vietnam and globally.

Ngọc Hiển District alone has nearly 11.500 hectares of certified shrimp - woodland farming meeting international standards, involving over 2,370 households. According to local residents, ASC-certified shrimp farming helps reduce environmental impact, increases labor productivity and meets the srequirements of import markets.

In the coming period, Cà Mau plans to expand internationally certified shrimp farming areas in districts such as Thoi Binh, Cai Nuoc and Phu Tan, aiming to build a sustainable, environmentally friendly shrimp value chain.
