The Vietnamese Government has requested the Australian side re-examine its ban on importing Vietnamese shrimp as it had caused serious impacts on local shrimp exporters, said Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade.
Earlier, Australian Agricultural Minister Barnaby Joyce declared the six-month ban on shrimp from Viet Nam due to white spot outbreak in Queensland.
Deputy Minister Khanh said that the ban caused losses for the Vietnamese aquaculture sector, including uncooked shrimp with around AUD 55 million.
"The order to suspend imports of uncooked shrimp without giving sufficient warning to Vietnamese shrimp export firms is not really in line with common practices," said Mr. Khanh.
Vietnamese shrimp exporters are facing losses and could go bankrupt following Australia's ban on imports of the crustacean, aimed at preventing white spot syndrome.
According to Mr. Khanh, it is necessary to remove the ban unless there is any evidence on shrimp export which causes the disease is founded.
In case Australia continues to maintain the ban, the Vietnamese side asks Australia to early present adequately scientific proofs which show the connection between Vietnamese shrimp imports and the white spot syndrome in Australia, the Deputy Minister added.
