VND2,600 billion for developing Mekong Delta fishery sector

(vasep.com.vn) Fishery is a key business sector of Mekong Delta; however, regional aquaculture and wild catch activities in the region have not reached its potentials.

On December 20th, 2013, Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) held a conference on promoting investment and the development of the fishery sector in Mekong Delta in cooperation with the Southwestern region’s Direction Board and Kien Giang People’s Committee.

Therefore, it is necessary to reorganize the fishery sector develop the fish production chain towards a higher value and diversification of seafood products. The links between localities in the production chain of different seafood branches must also be tightened.

The Prime Minister has approved the Master Plan on the development of Vietnam fishery by 2020 and orientations towards 2030. Accordingly, a producing hub will be built in Can Tho to serve fish farming areas in Mekong Delta. There will be another fishing hub in Kien Giang province to be linked with fisheries of the Southwest region.

From now to 2020, Mekong Delta will have 56 proposed fishery projects calling for a total investment of more than VND2,600 billion. This flow is expected to be poured into production of pangasius, shrimp and mollusk species; diversification of seafood products; wild fish catch; aquatic seed breeding; infrastructure, technologies and human resources.
