(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Since Mar 2016, Vietnam pangasius exports to Mexico have showed the recovery. This was a good sign for the Vietnam pangasius exporters.
Through Jul 2016, Vietnam pangasius exports to Mexico valued at US$40 million, accounting for 4.7% of Vietnam pangasius exports. Due to the year-on-year slump of 47.8% - 49% in Jan-Feb 2016, the figure in the first 7 months of this year was down 2.9% compared to the same period of 2015.

According to the official statistics of National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Mexico), in QII/2016, Mexico, the 2nd largest economy in Latin America, grew by 2.5% over the same period last year and this was the highest rate in a quarter since 2012. The figure in the first 6 months of 2016 also showed the year-on-year growth of 2.5%, mainly thanks to economic activities in the fields of agriculture, livestock, fisheries, mining, and exploitation of forest products with the growth of 3.4%; and service activities with the growth of 3.3%.
According to the data from ITC, in the first 5 months of this year, although imports of frozen pangasius fillets (HS code 030462) into Mexico fell by 35%, those of frozen pangasius (HS code 030324) sharply increased by 170 % compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, imports of some whitefish products, especially Chinese tilapia into Mexico dropped remarkably such as: frozen tilapia fillets (HS code 030461) decreased by 22.3%; frozen Alaska pollock (HS code 030475) down 16%, fresh/chilled/frozen cod down 7% - 14.5% over the same period last year.
In the two last quarters of 2016, Mexican imports of whitefish products forecasted to continue the sharp rise compared to the first two quarters of the year. Thus, in the coming time, Vietnam pangasius exporters will have opportunities to increase the exports to this market.
