Vietnam pangasius compete with Alaska pollock in Germany
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Currently, Germany stayed as the 4th biggest importer of Vietnam pangasius in the EU (after the UK, the Netherlands and Spain). As of Aug 2016, Vietnam pangasius exports to Germany valued at US$19.7 million, up 4% compared to the same period last year. Out of top 4 largest importing markets in the bloc, shipments to Germany showed the highest growth, while those to others posted the decreases.
EU’s demand continued to decline in the second consecutive year, which also impacted on Vietnam pangasius exports to Germany. Normally, Germany imports frozen pangasius fillets from Vietnam for domestic consumption and processing to re-exports to intra-EU countries.
According to the ITC, Vietnam recently was the largest supplier of pangasius and the 4th biggest supplier of whitefish products to this market.
However, Vietnam pangasius had to compete strongly with whitefish products in Germany, including Alaska pollock. According to ITC, the average import price of frozen pangasius fillets from Vietnam was cheaper than that of frozen Alaska pollock fillets from China in the first half of 2016. In which, the price of Alaska pollock ranged from US$2.79 to 2.9 per kilo, while that of frozen pangasius was from US$2.2 to 2.6 per kilo.
Germany remains as a potential market of Vietnam pangasius in the EU. In the coming time, along with the UK and the Netherlands, Vietnam pangasius exports to Germany can take up a larger market share.
