Tropical farms earn compliance with new tilapia eco-standard

Ecuador-based tilapia farmers

The standards, developed through a the WWF-sponsored Tilapia Aquaculture Dialogues, were designed to reduce the social and environmental impacts of tilapia farming.

The standards require that farms meet a broad set of criteria including compliance with national and local regulations; conservation management of habitat, biodiversity and water resources; and social responsibility.

Aquamar and Produmar farms were audited against standard in December 2010 by Control Union, a GLOBALG.A.P. accredited certifying body. The ASC will manage the implementation of this standard once its development phase is finalized.
