Currently, the province is home to 122 shrimp hatcheries, with the combined designed capacity of 2-2.2 billion of post larvae per year, and 44 units importing shrimp seeds from external sources, all providing seeds for more than 25,000 shrimp farmers at the locality.
From the beginning of the year to now, the shrimp hatcheries have been producing more than 350 million of shrimp seeds. According to the competent agencies, the provincial shrimp hatcheries will need around 3,800-5,000 black tiger broodstock to provide enough shrimp seeds for local shrimp farmers.
According to the survey of the Southern Sub-institute of Fisheries Planning, Tra Vinh has two large natural shrimp harvesting grounds, one in the north of Cung Hau estuary, Co Chien River, with an area of around 30,000ha, and one in Dinh An estuary, Hau River, with an area of around 20,000ha. Every year, these grounds provide a large amount of black tiger shrimp broodstock for local shrimp hatcheries and for the hatcheries in nearby provinces in the Mekong Delta.
