Tien Giang: Rebound in seafood exports in early 2014

(vasep.com.vn) After the long quiet trend last year, Tien Giang province's seafood exports started increasing in early 2014. This is a good news from Tien Giang-based seafood companies, which have hold a huge inventories due to difficulties in sales abroad. Some of them were pushed to reduce production and cut expenses to keep business.

Nguyen Thi Anh, Director of Song Tien Seafood Corporation (Sotico) shares that consumption demands from the company's traditional markets have slightly recovered and it is a promissing sign for its seafood sales. Since the beginning of 2014, Sotico has shipped abroad 40 containers per month. The company expects to generate US$20 million of total export value in 2014.

Nguyen Van Dao, General Director of Godaco Seafood Joint Stock Company (Godaco) also estimates that foreign markets for seafood are better and the selling price rebounded too. However, there is short supply of raw material for processing to export, leading to higher raw fish price and lower production of processing plants.

In the first months of 2014, Mekong Delta reported a sharp drop in the superficies and production of pangasius compared to previous years. Land for pangasius farming decreased by 8.57 percent to 480 hectares in Can Tho, that of Vinh Long down 10 percent to 277 hectares, and that of Dong Thap down 4.7 percent to 989 hectares.
