Fishing is a traditional and long-established business in My Tho, concentrating in two communes namely No.2 and Tan Long. In recent years, it is reported that fish farming in floating cages in Tien river and freshwater aquaculture in My Tho’s surrounding areas have been developing rapidly, being a driving force for local economy development.
Currently, there are 341 fishing vessels with a combined capacity of 100,000HP, and 1,330 floating cages for freshwater red tilapia farming in My Tho city. In 2009, despite numerous difficulties, fisheries output of the province was rather high thanks to great efforts of the local authorities in making full use of local labor sources, and ensuring social welfare.
