(vasep.com.vn) Son La hydroelectric lake in Son La province has potentials for fish and sturgeon aquaculture which can bring economic advantages for the province.
The survey was conducted by Lai Chau Investment and Development JSC (a sturgeon producer in Vietnam’s north-western region) in cooperation with local relevant authorities.
With water surface area of 200 square kilometer and 107 kilometer of length, Son La hydroelectric lake has favorable natural conditions for sturgeon production. Leaders of Son La province have cooperated with Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) and some companies to research in developing the high-value fish farming.
The price of sturgeon is now quoted at VND300,000 (US$15) per kilogram, ten-fold higher than that of pangasius, sturgeon roe is quoted at US$1,500 per kilogram. At current, some companies kicked off the fish farming project there. At the middle of September, Lai Chau Investment and Development JSC stocked 2,000 sturgeon seeds in 10 fish cages of 177 cubic metre per cage under industrial farming chain in Son La hydroelectric lake.
In 2012, the company plans to stock 200 fish cages. In coming time, more sturgeon hatcheries, industrial feed suppliers and sturgeon processing plants are expected to run to serve the new sector in the province.
