By early 2010, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) approved of the project “Technology transfer for high quality pangasius seed production” for the provinces in the Mekong Delta in the period of 2010-2011. The project implemented by Research Institute for Aquaculture 2 (RIA2) will transfer 100,000 good broodstocks to pangasius hatcheries.
In June 2011, RIA2 distributed 15,000 good broodstocks which are attached numbers to the hatcheries in the Mekong Delta. In the next time, the other 85,000 selective broodstocks will be distributed.
Therefore, MARD attached special importance to enhance fish seed quality and considered it as a part of sustainable development solutions for fish farming to fulfil strategy of Vietnam seafood development by 2020 approved by the Prime Minister.
However, according to Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) in the Mekong Delta provinces, apart from the improvement of fish seed quality, the local authorities need to carry out some comprehensive solutions. These are planning for fish frying producing areas, support for hatcheries to ensure their long term and stable development. National Research Agencies for Aquaculture, Aquatic Breeding Centers, local Centers for Agriculture and Fisheries Extension need to intensify to transfer science and technology in fish seed producing, hatching and farming. Animal Health Agency should strengthen to quarantine fish broodstocks, fish fingerlings of the localities and the whole country. The management agencies of fish seed need to check the quality of fish seed, penalize hatchery facilities in violation of regulations.
