(vasep.com.vn) According to Decision 315 by Prime Minister on purchasing shrimp farming insurance to help farmers reduce losses caused by diseases and save capital to restock, poor farmers will be supported 100 percent of insurance premiums, farmers living just above the poverty will be supported 80 percent, and 40 percent is supported for others.
Farmers can achieve insurance when they face risks of natural disasters (storms, flood, drought..) and plague.
In Tran De district, there are 130 farmers purchasing insurance for the total of shrimp farming area of 210 hectares.
The area of shrimp farming in the district totaled 2,824 hectares, in which, intensive black tiger farming area reached 835 hectares, 1,215 hectares of extensive black tiger shrimp and 774 hectares for whiteleg shrimp farming. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, over 1,500 hectares of shrimp farming area in the province were lost by disease. Bao Viet Insurance company compensated VND5 billion for 16 farmers who own 64 hectares of dead shrimp.
The farmer Lam Chi Lai stocked shrimp in a 0.7 hectare farm with density of 25 pieces per square meter. He spent VND 5.8 million to buy insurance and now his family received VND 22 million for damages caused by dead shrimp from the insurance company.
Shrimp farming insurance helps farmers to save capital to maintain cultivation however, the insurance is still not welcomed by farmers because they have to follow strict conditions in farming and complicated procedures to receive compensation by insurance companies.
Tran De - a coastal district – has many advantages in developing aquaculture and fishing. Insurance policy by the state will help farmers to expand shrimp farming activities. However, the number of shrimp farmers taking part in buying insurance is limited. People’s Committee is encouraging farmers to take part in the insurance program through guidance and communication.
