(pangasius-vietnam.com) This is on-season of pangasius farming but the pangasius seed supply is seriously low. Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) Duong Ngoc Minh said the current supply of fish seed can only meet 30 percent of demand for fish stock. It is expected that until the late April and the early May, seed market sees the recovery.
The scarcity of fish seed was attributable to fish farmers’ high demand in stocking thanks to upbeat outlook for 2012 pangasius exports. Floods and cold weather affected fry nursing and producing.
According to Tien Giang Sub-Department of Aquaculture, there are 2 large-scale seed nursing facilities and 1,236 hatcheries with the area of 545 hectares at the locality. However, from the beginning of 2012 up to now, just 5 million fish fries were produced in the province.
Lack of supply boosted the seed price, up 50 percent against the same period of 2011 and up 10 - 15 percent from that of the early 2012. Directorate of Fisheries reported pangasius seed price count 1.2-1.5 cm quoted at VND1,200-1,600 per piece; VND1,600 - 2,100 per piece with count 1.5-2 cm in Tien Giang province. In An Giang province, fingerling count 1.5 -1.8 cm was worth VND1,200 per piece, count 2 cm worth VND1,700.
