Mr. Duong Ngoc Minh, Head of VFFC said that, due to high input cost, pangasius farmers hesitate to invest in farming, causing short supply for processing. Currently, pangasius price remains at VND24,000 – 24,500 per kilogram; it is expected to soar up because there was not much commercial fish size enough to harvest now.
To avoid low price offered by foreign importers, VFFC has fixed export price of US$3.3 per kilogram for white meat pangasius, US$2.3 per kilogram for yellow meat pangasius. The price of US$2.6 per kilogram will be applied for Russian market. VASEP will provide export quotas of 5,000 MT per month to 10 enterprises meeting requirements to export to Russia.
According to statistics from VASEP, in the first five months of 2011, Vietnam shipped over 516,000 MT of seafood, recording US$2 billion, up 5.8 percent in volume and 27.2 percent in value from the same period last year. The EU, South Korea, ASEAN, Mexico and Canada were markets keeping two-digit growth in both volume and value compared with a year ago (by 23 – 68 percent).
