(vasep.com.vn) Currently, pangasius in Mekong Delta costs averagely at VND26,000 per kilogram. Many pangasius exporters recognize difficulties in raw fish supply this year, but they are not able to invest in their own fish farms because of lack of capital.
According to Nguyen Truong Minh, Vice Director of Quang Minh Seafood Limited Company (QMC), challenges in export to the EU market were clearly defined after the traditional Tet holiday in late January. Sovereign debt crisis in some European countries has impacted negatively consumption of seafood.
In the domestic market, shortage of raw pangasius supply was not so severe in the first weeks of 2012; however, Vietnam fish processors could not access to credit to develop fish farming areas. Many companies plan to cooperate with farmers to expand pangasius farming.
However, the cooperation between companies and fish farmers remains weak because they failed to reach benefit agreements.
If the problem of credit is solved, Vietnam pangasius exporters will likely take advantages in exporting products to the EU thanks to more competitive prices of pangasius than others food, added Mr. Minh.
In the next future, QMC aims to operate its current 50 hectare farming area and have no plan to expand more farms to ensure operation cost.
