(vasep.com.vn) Ho Chi Minh City, August 6th 2014 – In the framework of Vietfish 2014 and the EC-cofunded project “Establishing a Sustainable Pangasius Supply Chain in Vietnam” (SUPA), VASEP, Vietnam Pangasius Forum and the SUPA project partners (Vietnam Cleaner Production Centre (VNCPC), WWF Vietnam, WWF Austria & VASEP) in partnership with the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) joined together to host a “Vietnam Pangasius Forum - Vietfish 2014” with the theme “The sustainable growth for pangasius at European market” on Aug 6th 2014.
Pangasius is a major product accounted for more than 25% of the total export turnover of Vietnam's seafood, reaching more than 95% of total export value of Pangasius in the world. Until now, pangasius has been reaching over 150 countries and
territories with 1.8 billion US dollars per year in value in which the EU occupies the biggest market share of 21% in value of pangasius exporting from Vietnam
However, since 2011 a sharply downturn of pangasius consumption in EU caused by many reasons has strongly influenced on the pangasius industry that makes the insiders have to find the solutions to maintain and develop the sector sustainably in the EU in particular and the world market as well.
The reasons could come from the economic crisis in Europe and Vietnam, the competition between the pangasius with the other species or even from the competition of Vietnam panga exporters, the un-true stories on pangasius production…Whatever the reasons are we have to admit the truth that we have lacked the effective and sufficient solutions and means against the facing issues for a sustainable development of the panga sector in the past few years.
To overcome the issues and difficulties to keep maintaining and developing pangasius industry, the Vietnam Govement has put most effort to improve the whole pangasius value chain by the New Decree.
Together the Gov’s efforts, SUPA project partners (VNCPC, VASEP, WWF Vietnam & WWF Austria) in a long- term project operated in Vietnam and Europe as well with the targets by 2020 the pangasius producing, processing and exporting sector in Vietnam is safety, environmently, economically and socially sustainable. Through the effective activites from the production to the market, we do hope to contribute more value and also enhance the image of Panga industry in EU and the world market.
SUPA project and VASEP are very pleased and happy to welcome our friends from over the world to visit our beautiful country and see the development and improvement of pangasius sector and the fisheries in general happening day by day on the way towards sustainable development.
