(vasep.com.vn) According to the Vietnam General Customs, the fish exports to the US in the first 10 months of this year reached US$ 273.3 million, down 16.2% from the same period last year.
The US market ranked the second largest importers, accounting for 18.7% of the total pangasius exports.
The economic downturn during this period was one of the reasons caused declined seafood sales (including pangasius exports) of Vietnam. Besides, high anti-dumping tariffs for Vietnamese companies also hindered pangasius exports to the US.
Although the fish exports to this market fell but the average export price rose nearly 4%. The average price of Vietnam pangasius exported to the US in the first nine months of 2014 was at US$ 3.09/kg, an increase of 1.31% compared to the same period in 2013.
Pangasius is still the 6th in the top 10 consumed seafoods in the US. According to the US Department of Commerce, based on data from the National Fisheries Institute (NFI), compared with 2013, fish consumption per capita increased by 0.1 pound. The market is a big consumer, but fish consumption per capita is much lower than in other developed countries. Top 10 seafood products accounted for nearly 97% of all seafoods consumed in the US.
